Our Practices

At Still Wagon Farm, we honor the intrinsic nature of our animals, giving them the freedom to express their instincts and thrive in the outdoors. We believe that healthy, happy animals are the foundation of high-quality, nutritious food. All of our animals, including our pigs and chickens, are raised on pasture, enjoying the fresh air, sunshine, and natural diet that their wild counterparts would.

Central to our farming practice is the concept of silvopasture – a powerful, regenerative approach that combines forestry and grazing in a way that benefits the land, the animals, and us as farmers.

Silvopasture involves integrating trees, pasture, and livestock together as a holistic system. Rather than separating forests and fields, we combine them, creating a rich, diverse landscape where trees and animals benefit each other.

The benefits of silvopasture are manifold:

  1. Environmental Stewardship: Trees sequester carbon, contributing to climate change mitigation. They also improve soil health by preventing erosion, improving water retention, and enriching the soil with organic matter.
  2. Animal Welfare: Trees provide shade and shelter for our animals, enhancing their comfort and wellbeing. The varied diet available in a silvopasture – leaves, grass, bugs, and more – contributes to the overall health and nutrition of our livestock.
  3. Farm Productivity: Silvopasture systems can yield both high-quality timber and livestock, diversifying farm income. Also, the healthier, more resilient land can support more productive farming over the long term.

In our second year of building a silvopasture, we are already witnessing the transformation. It is a testament to our commitment to living harmoniously with the land and is a tangible example of our belief in better management over costly, often detrimental, inputs.

At Still Wagon Farm, our practices are not only about producing food but also about nurturing life in all its diverse forms. We invite you to join us in this journey towards a more sustainable, regenerative, and compassionate way of farming.

Our embrace of biodiversity extends beyond our livestock. Our silvopasture lanes are alive with a variety of perennial crops that contribute to the ecosystem's richness while providing bountiful yields of delicious and nourishing products. We cultivate tree fruits, berries, mushrooms, and medicinal herbs, integrating them into the pasture ecosystem.

This summer, we look forward to the harvest of blackberries, elderberries, blueberries, black raspberries, and wine cap mushrooms. Their growth is a testament to the vitality of our silvopasture system and the potential of perennial crops in regenerative agriculture. If you're interested in savoring these summer delights, please email us to join the waitlist.

But the diversity of life at Still Wagon Farm doesn't end there. We also keep bees, respecting their vital role in the ecosystem and managing them in a natural way. We build pollinator spaces around the farm, encouraging a thriving bee population and supporting wider pollinator biodiversity. This not only ensures the health of our bees but also boosts the productivity and resilience of our entire farm.

In addition to our silvopasture and beekeeping practices, we also maintain a chemical-free garden. We employ a no-till method with raised beds, reducing soil disruption, preserving soil structure and life, and preventing erosion. This approach helps us grow robust, nutrient-dense vegetables while caring for the soil that sustains us.

At Still Wagon Farm, every practice, every decision, underlines our commitment to fostering life, respecting nature's rhythms, and producing food that nourishes both body and soul.
